One of the most captivating novels I ever read was Love in the Time of Cholera, a novel written by Colombian Nobel prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez. Amid the Covid-19 turmoil, a special friend phones me yesterday, and in his familiar, reassuring manner he reminds me of this love story.
I will do you an injustice if I share the plot, rather, I hope that you might find the time, now that you have time, to read it. It tells the tale of relentless love. Of true love. Of love that stood the test of viruses and time.
But what does Love in the time of Cholera have to do with branding?
Well, there’s a metaphor for me. Gabriel Garcia Marquez could never have guessed, at the time of writing his novel, that the story would be so prevalent 22 years later. What he did do was listen to his inner voice and wrote what was inside of him. He took the time to become still and write a love story that would inspire and give hope to thousands of people. His brand was that.
My brand started 9 years ago.
My memories of feeling passionately purpose-driven in those early days are still as vivid now as when I decided to take the leap of faith. I knew I was exceptional with make-up application, and that was my key to finding a career that would also be filled with purpose and the freedom of being my own boss.
I thought I was just going to do make-up.
Little did I know that I was going to run a business. A business that requires strategy, financials, marketing, sales, communication, websites, social media pages, booking systems, customer care and a ton of other things I still haven’t gotten around to doing.
“ I have failed many times in these past nine years. I made lots of bad decisions. I communicated in ways that offended people and alienated friends. But I also gained a tremendous sense of knowing that I was using my God-given talents to make this world a little bit better, one brushstroke at a time.”
Every time I see the look on a woman’s face when she sees herself in the mirror my inner voice rejoices.
And when I see a guy (their shells are always harder to crack) stealing glances of his handsome reflection in the mirror – that’s giving a person confidence! That’s giving a person self-worth. That’s instilling a belief in every single person that they are good enough. And that’s such an amazing gift to share.
But I know that there’s more for me.
Once the makeup and perfectly tailored suits are taken off, then what? This is where personal branding comes in. I look forward to sharing how – and more importantly why – I am writing personal branding as a service offering into the next chapter of my business’ story.
That little voice deep inside, the little incessant voice that would not be silenced kept on saying: “There must be more… there must be more… find it, go, search, jump, just do it!”
