04/06/2023HOW TO DEAL WITH SKIN PIGMENTATION?
Hyperpigmentation occurs when there is an over-production and/or irregular distribution of the melanin pigment.
Melanin, which in physiological conditions serves to protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation and give skin its colour, is produced in the skin’s basal, spinous layer (the deepest layer) by specialised cells called melanocytes. The melanin itself is formed, beginning from the amino acid Tyrosine, through the action of the enzyme Tyrosinase and subsequent oxidative processes (melanogenesis).
In the melanocytes, the newly synthesized melanin is released in the form of small granules (melanosomes) that then circulate to the superficial layers of the skin, accumulating in the keratinocytes. Each melanocyte provides melanosomes to a group of approximately 36 keratinocytes with which it maintains functional contact, and as a whole, they constitute the epidermal melanin unit.
What are the causes?
Advancing Age: Over time, the skin’s pigmentation tends to become increasingly irregular and so-called “age spots” start to appear.
Hormonal changes: Irregular skin pigmentation can follow hormonal changes, especially those related to the hormone Melanotrope (MSH/Melanocyte stimulating hormone). Hormonal changes occur with the use of oral contraceptives, steroidal drugs, and hormone replacement therapy in menopause and during pregnancy.
Exposure to UV rays: After the skin has been exposed to the sun, the synthesis of melanin increases considerably as cutaneous pigmentation increases. In the event of exposure to intense and occasional solar radiation (e.g. short holidays occurring intermittently during the year), the risk of incidence of skin “mottling” increases. Any lightning treatment will prove to be of little effect and the short term unless it is used in conjunction with adequate protection on the skin from UV radiation throughout the year.
What is the best cosmetic solution?
For best cosmetic results, an effective de-pigmenting cosmetic treatment must contain a blend of active ingredients that work in synergy on various causes.
The following are required simultaneously:
- Effectively protect the areas in question from UV radiation.
- Limit the action of hormonal changes with an MSH hormone antagonist.
- Limit the synthesis of melanin in the melanocytes by inhibiting the enzyme Tyrosinase.
- Use powerful anti-oxidants that inhibit the oxidative reactions of melanogenesis, reducing the formation of melanin.
- Impede the transport of melanin granules newly formed by the melanocytes to the superficial layers of the epidermis.
- Use exfoliants to increase the speed of skin cell renewal, thus accelerating the transport of hyper-pigmented keratinocytes away from the treated areas and facilitating their replacement with cells containing a lower quantity of melanin.
- Improve the vehiculation of the whitening active ingredients directly to the melanocytes, thanks to specific and powerful carriers.
